Jesus the Man Child
From the first prophecy in Genesis 3:15 to its fulfillment in Revelation 12:5-11, God sent a Child, a Son, to save His people from their sins, destroy the works of the devil, judge this foolish world, and draw Gentiles to Himself. Here is a fast survey of the Bible about the holy child Jesus, Son of God.
Introduction:
- We have been studying the Path of Truth from Eden to our present wait for the Lord’s soon return.
- From the very beginning of the Bible and its first prophecy to the end of the Bible, it is about Jesus.
- The Path of Truth is preeminently about Him, for He told the Jews their scriptures testified of Him.
- By the providence of God we had occasion to consider Mariolatry recently after Pope Frank’s death.
- We abominate the Rosary’s 10-fold exaltation of Mary over God and all blasphemies of Mariolatry.
- Yet, we understand, by the Bible’s first book, last book, and in between, the birth of Jesus is crucial.
- Today we observe the Lord’s Supper, and in my short time now with you, let us see His birth again.
- In a few minutes, with great simplicity, let us find from beginning to end about Jesus the Man Child.
- The fulness of the Godhead in a human body is the great mystery of godliness – transcendent drama.
- Due to time and desire for simplicity, lest we get lost in weeds at a verse, let us quickly cover a few.
- While we certainly reject the RCC’s Christ Mass in December, we love the birth of the Man Child.
- Let us start at the conclusion, with Jesus on His throne and His remnant church preserved unto us.
- For sermons related to this sermon about the childbirth of Jesus … here, here, here, here, here, here, here.
Revelation 12:5-11
5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.
6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.
7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
- This is where we get our title, Jesus the Man Child, consistent with other scriptures.
- The woman is the church, for she ran and hid in the wilderness where God kept her.
- The war is the casting of Satan out of heaven after the resurrection of the Lord Jesus.
- The result was a song in heaven of salvation from the accusations of the devil like Job.
- The result was also bold martyrs of the Lamb that were willing to die for His gospel.
- The remnant church was preserved, though terribly persecuted 1260 years, unto us!
- We can only consider ourselves the remnant seed by keeping the Path of Truth of God
Genesis 3:15
And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
- The horrible history and terrible judgments of this one chapter are incredible … here.
- Mankind offended his Creator, was condemned to three deaths, and driven from Him.
- But it has the cure for the catastrophe – foretold to Satan – Eve’s Son would kill him.
- Genesis 3 is negative/hopeless, but for 3:15. Consider! A man child is the difference!
- Satan would wound Jesus but a little – His heel; Jesus caused him a fatal head wound.
- Here in the start of human history is the perpetual and violent war between two seeds.
- RCC, adoring Mary, have, “I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel.”
Genesis 22:17-18
17 That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;
18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.
- This prophecy has the same little helper as in Genesis 3:15, it is a man child by, “his.”
- But further, we know this prophecy means Jesus and us in Him, Abraham’s true seed.
- New Testament Christians should read the Old Testament with the assistance of Paul.
- All the promises are spiritually fulfilled by our faith and baptism (Gal 3:6-8,16,26-29).
Isaiah 7:14
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
- About 3400 years after Eden, God told His church, a woman symbolically, of a Son.
- How could there be a more dramatic sign than a virgin conceiving a son, a man child?
- His name would be Immanuel, for He would be God with us, God in a human body.
- The RSV (1952) and NRSV (1989) rejected the verse’s virgin with “a young woman.”
Isaiah 9:6-7
6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.
- The coming Man Child would not be ordinary at all, but rather a perfect divine Ruler.
- God is not ashamed of David for the comparison, for he was a mighty king of Israel.
- He would increase His perfect rule and just peace that would last forever without end.
- What is behind this incredible political event? The same sovereign Jehovah of Eden!
Jeremiah 31:22
How long wilt thou go about, O thou backsliding daughter? for the LORD hath created a new thing in the earth, A woman shall compass a man.
- Jeremiah promised to Israel a new thing God would create in the earth. How is it new?
- The new thing would be a woman surrounding a man – him inside a woman’s womb.
- All men but Adam arrive this way, but God’s creation made this one unique (Is 7:14).
- The angel’s explanation of Mary’s pregnancy fulfilled this event perfectly (Luk 1:35).
- If you need a little contextual help, note that Herod killing infants is near (Jer 31:15).
Matthew 1:18-23
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.
20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
- Joseph, justly wondering, was comforted his virgin Mary would have the Man Child.
- The Holy Spirit first states the conception is by the Holy Ghost and then God’s angel.
- The Cure for the catastrophe, Remedy for the ruin, and Savior of sinners, was a Son.
- In context here, written by a Jew for Jews, with David and Abraham, is Joseph’s tree.
- The Man Child was conceived in a virgin, birthed safely, and He would save all elect.
- He was far more than any ordinary child, for He was the Word manifest in the flesh.
Luke 1:26-35
26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.
28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
- This time it is Mary justly wondering, and the angel Gabriel explained the details well.
- She would compass a man, by God’s divine intervention, as Jeremiah said (Jer 31:22).
- Look at the glory of her Son … Great, Son of the Highest, David’s throne, eternal rule!
- Here is a prime proof of the incarnational sonship of Jesus Christ against the eternal.
- God being the Father by miraculous power answered not knowing a man and His title!
- Mary is not the woman of Revelation 12, for that is a woman symbolizing the church.
Luke 2:8-14
8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
- What an incredible declaration by the angels about the birth of a lowly, human baby.
- These angels fought with Michael against the devil and his angels shortly (Rev 12:7).
- This Man Child would grow up and be called Jesus the Christ, our Lord and Saviour.
- It brings me great pleasure to tell you that God had ordered this praise (Hebrews 1:6).
- Praise continued beyond Paul’s verse, for His ascension gained more (Rev 5:22-23).
Luke 2:21-24
21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
22 And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;
23 (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)
24 And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.
- Note for joy … circumcising, his, he, him, him, male … clear terms of the Man Child.
- This Man Child, being the firstborn in more ways than one, was holy to the Lord God.
- He was named JESUS in obedience to the message of the angel to Joseph and Mary.
Luke 2:25-35
25 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.
26 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.
27 And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,
28 Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,
29 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:
30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;
32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.
- What was the consolation of Israel Simeon waited for? He waited for the Man Child!
- The Holy Ghost told him he would live long enough to see God’s Messiah (Christ).
- And directed by the Holy Spirit, he declared that the Man Child was God’s salvation.
- He took Him up in his arms, for Jesus was only a child of 40 days at this dedication.
Luke 2:36-38
36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity;
37 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.
38 And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.
- She arrived at the same time and praised God like Simeon for the young Man Child.
- As a prophetess, she then spoke of Him to all that looked for redemption, or salvation.
- The timed prophecy of Messiah in Daniel 9 gave considerable direction to the wise.
John 12:27-33
27 Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.
28 Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.
29 The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him.
30 Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.
31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.
32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.
33 This he said, signifying what death he should die.
- The Man Child glorified God when He approached death to cast Satan out of heaven.
- The Man Child died a Roman death of crucifixion, and being lifted up saved Gentiles.
Acts 4:23-31
23 And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them.
24 And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is:
25 Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things?
26 The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ.
27 For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together,
28 For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.
29 And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word,
30 By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.
31 And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.
- Note the unique phrase to God about His Son … thy holy child Jesus (Acts 4:27,30).
- Our purpose in this study is to see Jesus the Man Child, and this phrase is part of it.
- The men were full of the Holy Ghost, appealed to scripture, and the place was shaken.
Romans 16:20
And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
- This church was in the city of the red dragon beast – pagan and papal Rome of Satan.
- From the very beginning God had planned our total dominion over Satan by His Son.
- If you are trampling on the devil, then the victory is complete and fatal for the devil.
- The Man Child destroyed the devil at the cross and will cast him into eternal torment.
- We will do it with Him, for the Bible prophesies that we will judge angels (I Cor 6:3).
Galatians 4:4-6
4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.
6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
- What timing? Known unto God are all His works from the beginning of the world!
- God’s Son = the Man Child created in the womb of a virgin by divine miracle power.
- His Purpose = to redeem the children of God and pay for their adoption as God’s sons.
- The Result = God gave the gift of His personal Spirit into our hearts for joyful praise.
Colossians 2:13-15
13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
- The cross is crucial here, especially in verses 14 and 15. What happened at the cross?
- Jesus initiated three things – judgment of world, Satan cast out, all men drawn to Him.
- The devil’s great work was getting us cursed to death, but Jesus destroyed him and it.
- He spoiled the devil and angels – principalities and powers – by rescuing us from him.
- He openly disgraced the devil and his plans by triumphing over death by His death.
I Timothy 2:9-15
9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
10 But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.
11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
15 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.
- Paul put women down four ways: appearance, under man, order of creation, deceived.
- Due to what Eve did in Eden, God cursed conception, pregnancy, and childbearing.
- But his summary was salvation by the Man Child, Who came by cursed childbearing.
- This is Mary’s childbirth of a Savior for women, who prove election by good works.
- This relatively obscure and difficult text is corrupted by several misinterpretations.
- Some say all godly women with good works will be saved from the pain of childbirth.
- Some say godly women will be saved from grief of childbirth by obedient children.
- Some say godly women are saved eternally in spite of usual difficulties in childbirth.
- Commentators understanding this text as in the next link are Adam Clarke, John Gill.
- For more about this verse and its glory of Mary’s childbearing to save women … here.
Hebrews 2:14-15
14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
- We, the children of God, are flesh and blood creatures, unlike angels, so Jesus is one.
- How did the Word of God become the Man Child to destroy the devil? Incarnation!
- See the wisdom and power of God – the Man Child died to destroy the claim of death.
- See the benefit of the Man Child – we never have to fear death for religious bondage.
Conclusion:
- God used the weaker sex … by her cursed childbearing … to bring a Man Child to use the curse of death … to destroy the works of the devil, chief of which was death! What great power and wisdom!
- When Satan must have vainly thought he had defeated the Man Child at the cross, the Man Child made a show of destroying him openly (John 13:2,27; Ephesians 1:19-23; Colossians 1:13; 2:15).
- The salvation the Man Child obtained cannot be affected by Satan (Romans 8:33-39; Rev 12:9-10).
- Having bound the devil, the Man Child now blesses the gospel worldwide (Rev 20:1-3; Acts 26:18).
- And believing saints are waiting for the party to begin (Matthew 8:29; Jude 1:6; Matthew 25:41).
- As we come to the Lord’s Table for the Lord’s Supper, let us glory in the Man Child dying for us.
- These stupendous events and facts are ignored by the world, but we should love and rejoice in them.
- Without His incarnation in Mary’s womb, He would not have human life in order to die for us.
- Without His incarnation in her womb, He would not have the body and blood we remember now.
- See these scriptures among others pertaining to the Man Child: Genesis 49:10; Numbers 24:17-19; Deuteronomy 18:18-19; Psalm 2:7-12; Micah 5:2; Matthew 2:2,8-11; Luke 3:23-38; Colossians 2:9.
