Sins to Hate from N.T. (4)

Pride … an excessive opinion of oneself to despise others, resist authority, or greedily lusts.

1. Is one of the principal components of worldly living contrary to God (I John 2:15-17).
2. God hates pride – the devil’s sin (I Tim 3:6) – so He resists proud Christians (I Pet 5:5).
3. Jesus Christ gave the perfect example of humility and service we can copy (Phil 2:1-8).
4. Make others more important than you; it is Jesus’ religion (Matt 20:26; Rom 12:10,16).

Sex Sins … misuse the gift of sexual pleasure God gave His children by breaking its rules.

1. Sanctification includes avoiding fornication and not defrauding others (I Thess 4:1-8).
2. God created sex, knows it best, and gave rules to maximize it (Heb 13:4; I Cor 7:1-5).
3. Jesus died for your body; you should honor Him with it (I Cor 6:12-20; Eph 5:3-12).
4. Sodomy is a sin to be excluded from churches (Rom 1:18-32; I Cor 6:9-11; I Tim 1:10).

Respect of Persons … making a difference in treatment of persons by earthly measures.

1. The religion of Jesus does not allow differences in treatment by such things (Jas 2:1-9).
2. In Christ Jesus there are no differences, so remember this equality (Gal 3:28; I Pet 3:7).
3. Each member God put in a church has its role, even extra attention (I Cor 12:12-27).
4. The local churches of Jesus are a personal equalizer, putting members on equal footing.

Filthiness, Foolish Talking, Jesting … common sins of speech that are easy to commit.

1. Three inconvenient speech sins replaced with gracious thanksgiving (Eph 5:3-5; 4:29).
2. Speech should be the best we can make it … gracious, flavorful, appropriate (Col 4:6).
3. A great measure of men is speech; see your defects in God’s mirror (Jas 1:26; 3:2-12).
4. If you want to love life and see good days, then guard your speech wisely (I Peter 3:10).

Meddling Busybodies … think, ask, or poke around in others lives without godly purpose.

1. The only people that do this never have good families, marriages, or souls themselves.
2. Paul and Peter warned about busybodies (I Timothy 5:11-15; I Pet 4:15; II Thess 3:11).
3. Christian liberty used only for peace (Rom 14:1,19). Be wise retirees, unemployed, etc.
4. Let every man have his own household and rules until he obviously commits a clear sin.

Perfunctory Marriages … lack in the romantic passion God intended and you promised.

1. Less than the best for this great gift will hinder God even hearing prayers (I Peter 3:7).
2. All romance and sex first desired and to eliminate fornication is ordered (I Cor 7:1-5).
3. Wives and husbands have respective duties to keep marriages humming (Col 3:18-19).
4. Women are taught to love and obey their husbands for home (Titus 2:3-5; I Tim 5:14).

Covetousness … is discontented, unthankful desire for what you do not have or others may.

1. Coveting, craving something you do not have, made the Ten (Ex 20:17; Rom 13:8-10).
2. The N.T. twice calls covetousness idolatry for its evil belly worship (Eph 5:5; Col 3:5).
3. With God’s presence, contentment should be easy to learn (Heb 13:5-6; I Jn 2:15-17).
4. Great gain, by the truth, is to live godly and simply with contentment (I Tim 6:6-10).

Witchcraft … involved with witches, sorcery, fortune telling, future prognostication, etc.

1. This is an excludable sin in a long list of works of the flesh (Gal 5:19-21; Rev 21:8).
2. God hates witchcraft and any appeal to the supernatural (Deut 18:9-14; Acts 19:17-20).
3. Think … Ouija boards, Harry Potter, Bewitched!, I Dream of Jeannie, Dungeons & Dragons, Pokemon, Merlin, horoscope, superstition, luck, magic, Zodiac signs, etc., etc.
4. Is it possible for a witch or sorcerer or false prophet to do miracles? Yes (Deut 13:1-5).

Lazy Worker … a slothful sluggard that Solomon condemned and the N.T. also condemns.

1. Work should be done diligently to glorify God (I Cor 10:31-33; Colossians 3:17,22-25).
2. Employees are specifically ordered to obey their employers (I Tim 6:1-2; Titus 2:9-10).
3. This is part of sanctification along with sexual fidelity (I Thess 4:11-12; Romans 12:11).
4. Paul ordered lazy persons to be starved and put out of the church (II Thess 3:6-15; 2:15).

Booze Abuse … is dangerous but subtle and must be guarded by three levels of vigilance.

1. We believe, as the N.T. proves, in moderate use of alcohol (Luke 7:33-35; I Tim 5:23).
2. Hate deceiving drunkenness (Eph 5:18; Rom 13:13; I Cor 5:11; 6:10; Gal 5:21; Pr 20:1).
3. It can compromise inhibitions of speech and of sexual temperance (Proverbs 23:29-35).
4. Church must not get drunk; deacons not given to much; bishops not given (I Tim 3:3,8).
5. The alcohol topic is great to exalt scripture over tradition or emotion … here, here, here.

 

Haughty Church … presumes it is prosperously special while lacking true spiritual vitality.

1. Laodicea was terribly arrogant and presumptuous without real substance (Rev 3:14-22).
2. Ephesus was not said to be proud, but good deeds did not cover little love (Rev 2:1-7).
3. Each church (and its members) must not compromise the Spirit (Eph 4:30; I Thess 5:19).
4. We must always believe and humbly say, We are not what we should be, so let’s change.
5. We cannot lose sight of true priorities and work together to keep them … here, here, here.

 

Bitterness … is grudges and resentment from offences or envy not flushed that eat the soul.

1. The apostles condemned it and warned about results and judgment (Heb 12:15; Jas 5:9).
2. Bitter resentment in your heart should never be protected; it is from hell (Jas 3:14-18).
3. Bitterness must be rejected and replaced with tenderness (Eph 4:31-32; I Cor 13:4-7).
4. Husbands can be bitter against wives for things like weakness (Col 3:19; I Peter 3:7).
5. Pastors must preach against this bile in the heart and mind rather than love … here, here.

 

Belly Worship … thinking about and pursuing earthly things more than heavenly things.

1. Many Christians are belly-worshipping enemies of Jesus minding earth (Phil 3:18-19).
2. Baptized believers should show a resurrected life looking up (Col 3:1-4; Rom 8:1-8).
3. John and James also blasted any loving God’s enemies (I John 2:15-17; James 4:4).
4. Deserters, dividers, and heretics are belly-worshippers to be avoided (Rom 16:17-18).

Dislike Preaching … is to be today’s carnal Christians that will not endure sound doctrine.

1. Paul warned about despise prophesyings, or Bible preaching (I Thes 5:20; Rom 10:17).
2. The error is a symptom of the perilous times of the last days (II Timothy 3:1-5; 4:1-4).
3. Sermons are boring; people want entertainment; but they need a blast from John Baptist.
4. Reject this lazy television generation; be Ezra’s Israel (Neh 8:1-12; Acts 13:44; 17:11).

Women Leading … either in the home or church is contrary God and leads to problems.

1. First, wives should follow husbands in everything (Eph 5:22-24; Tit 2:5; Joshua 24:15).
2. Second, they may not teach or ask questions in church (I Cor 14:34-35; I Tim 2:11-12).
3. Third, they showed vulnerability to deception in Eden (I Tim 2:13-14; II Tim 3:6-7).
4. This rule has been compromised to great evil among most Christians. Let us hold fast.

Dishonor Rulers … is a common and terrible error even among Christians in America.

1. Very harsh words in the N.T. are for despising dignities (Jude 1:8-10; II Peter 2:10-12).
2. Resisting civil rulers is resisting God; He ordained them (Rom 13:1-7; I Pet 2:11-17).
3. The apostolic order by Jesus our King is to be great citizens (Titus 3:1; Matt 22:15-22).
4. We should obey, pay, and pray for them as the sons of God (Rom 13:1-7; I Tim 2:1-3).

Marry Unbeliever … is not an option or suggestion but rather a key rule for God and good.

1. God’s terrible Flood and anger at Jehoshaphat were for affinity (Gen 6:1-3; II Chr 18:1).
2. Esau’s wives grieved his parents, so they sent Jacob (Gen 26:34-35; 27:46; 28:1-2,6-9).
3. Paul’s apostolic rule is clear, denying carnal Christians (I Cor 11:11; 7:39; II Cor 6:14).
4. Mixed marriages are bad, destroying souls (I Kings 11:1-10; Ex 34:16; Neh 13:23-27).
