Jesus Is Jehovah
A Brief Study of the Deity of Jesus Christ
Philippians 2:9-11
ETYMOLOGY
- Jesus is the English form of the Greek name “Jeshua,” which is the Greek form of the Hebrew name “Jehoshua.”
- The Hebrew-to-English name of the leader of Israel after Moses’ death was Joshua.
- However, the fuller name given to him by Moses was actually Jehoshua (Num 13:16).
- The Hebrew-to-Greek-to-English name of this man is Jesus (Acts 7:45; Hebrews 4:8).
- Mary’s Son was named Joshua or Jehoshua in Hebrew. The specific name Jesus and its pronunciation are distinctly English.
INTRODUCTION
- Jesus is a man, and this we must always remember; even when we study His Deity.
- The incarnation was to make Jesus a man; He died for human sinners (Heb 2:14-18).
- He was conceived in a woman, had a birth date, grew in wisdom and stature, died, was resurrected, and disappeared bodily into heaven; where He sits at God’s right hand.
- It is a mystery, yet it is revealed. Therefore, we should know and teach it (I Tim 3:16).
IMPORTANCE
- Every Christian should be certain Jesus is truly Jehovah God and able to defend it modestly.
- It is one of the principal points of our faith that is clearly taught and emphasized in Scripture.
- It is one of the chief targets of Satan and his cults – they cannot stand Jesus Christ as Lord.
- The Arians first stated opposition to it, and the Russellites (Jehovah’s Witnesses) do so today.
- The Founder of our religion is not just a nice man, a good man, a good example, or a prophet.
- It is a fact that most every cult attempts to reduce Jesus Christ in some way from being God.
METHOD
- We contend for the truth only from the Word of God – inspired Scriptures of the King James.
- You must first agree or establish the King James Version as God’s Word in English.
- We avoid the foolish and unlearned questions of other translations, Greek, or Hebrew.
- If you grant their false premise, then you must contend without an absolute authority.
- The New World Translation and N.A.S.V. have the perversion of a “begotten god.”
- There is only one God. This is a foundational point of doctrine without room for discussion.
- The foundation of Biblical religion is that of one LORD God to love (Deut 6:4; 4:35).
- And this one God does not share His worship or give away glory (Ex 34:14; Is 42:8).
- The one true God could find no other gods (Isaiah 43:10-11; 44:6,8; 45:6,22; 46:9).
- The foundation has not changed in the New Testament (I Cor 8:4-6; Ep 4:6; I Ti 2:5).
- Therefore, any verse referring to God refers to Jehovah, for He is the only God.
- There is no “begotten god,” “lesser god,” “a god,” or any other such wicked illusion.
- We stand on the Trinity – though not a Scriptural word – the fact of three in one is obvious.
- We see from the very beginning a plurality of Persons in the Godhead (Genesis 1:26).
- And this plurality continues even through the Old Testament (Gen 11:7; Isaiah 6:8).
- And we see this plurality in the New Testament (Mat 3:13-17; 28:19-20; II Cor 13:14).
- Therefore we are thankful for I John 5:7, which defines this three-in-one God for us.
- We do not debate the deity of Christ with those rejecting or misunderstanding His Sonship.
- How can you discuss the full deity of Jesus Christ allowing for a generated deity?
- Jesus Christ is the Word of God made flesh, and the Word of God is Jehovah God.
- It is the denial of the Scriptural Son and Father that is antichrist and religion from Satan.
- God has given a record of His Son we must believe (I John 2:22-23; 4:2-3; 5:9-10).
- Those who reject this doctrine are to be avoided (II John 9-11; II Thess 3:1-2).
- It is interesting that many of those who deny Jesus is Jehovah also deny hell. I wonder why.
PROOF
- Isaiah 7:14 cp Matthew 1:23 The son born to Mary was by angelic witness – God with us.
- Isaiah 9:6 His names among others include The Mighty God and The Everlasting Father.
- I John 5:7 cp I John 1:1
- Many argue ignorantly this verse is spurious, but we will only contend from the KJV.
- The King James Version stands or falls with I John 5:7, for God blessed both.
- The authenticity of this text has been confirmed by early church writings.
- Do not fear or apologize for this text. Do not use the KJV but avoid I John 5:7.
- If you encounter a person too stubborn or ignorant to accept it, let them alone.
- There are three in heaven – Persons; there is only one in heaven – Nature or Godhead.
- The Word is one with the Father and Holy Ghost in the single Divine Nature of God.
- The Word became flesh in the complex Person of Jesus Christ (I John 1:1; John 1:14).
- Many argue ignorantly this verse is spurious, but we will only contend from the KJV.
