For What Did Jesus Die?




9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, 10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

I Corinthians 6:9-11


  1. We have the Lord’s Supper before us, and it is our duty to consider and remember His death.
  2. Look at Corinth! It was a church of sinners guilty of crimes that would keep them from inheriting the kingdom of God – but they were washed, sanctified, and justified sinners!
  3. We are studying John 8, where Jesus told Jews they would die in their sins (Jn 8:21-24), which indicates something worse than death after death because of sins (Heb 9:27-28).
  4. There are many glorious aspects of our Lord’s death that we have considered at other times.
  5. WHY … is the purpose God sent His Son to display and magnify His grace to the universe.
  6. WHEN … is the fullness of time and a Jewish Passover that dated the death of Jesus Christ.
  7. WHERE … is the second temple, Calvary, Golgotha, and the Roman cross that killed Him.
  8. HOW … is the compound consequence of torture and the cross that Psalm 22 details well.
  9. WHOM … is the great doctrine of limited atonement or particular redemption of the elect.
  10. But today we must consider WHAT Jesus died for on the cross as it pertains to you and me.
  11. We know He died for sin … yea, sins … yea, our sins … but we should consider it carefully.
    1. Sin is the transgression of the law (I John 3:4). It is doing anything contrary to the Bible.
    2. If you think your little sins do not matter, Jesus rebuked that foolish idea (Matt 5:19-20).
    3. If you have failed to keep all the things God has commanded, you are doomed (Gal 3:10).
    4. If one sin – even your least sin – is not fully paid for, you are doomed to hell (Jas 2:10).
    5. Muse about Adam’s one sin of eating forbidden fruit damning 100 billion to three deaths.
    6. The sight, smell, and finality of death should grip you; the fact babies die must grip you.
    7. If you did not sin, which you cannot do, you are guilty of Adam’s sin (Romans 5:12-19).
    8. The whole Bible proves that God sees all sins and does not acquit or overlook (Pr 15:3).
    9. You have committed sins of all kinds in vast numbers that are in God’s books (Re 20:12).
    10. Those sent to hell are so for their wickedness and sins (Mat 7:23; Rev 21:8,27; 22:14-15).
    11. You are a worker of iniquity from birth to this day. Even one sin of any kind damns you.
    12. You are guilty of far more than one sin – you are guilty of many sins of the worst kind.
    13. Children and adults know they have more crimes or faults than those found and punished.
    14. Therefore, the facts before the perfect, just court of heaven damn your soul to eternal hell.
    15. For the sake of time, let us read a sample of your sins to sink your soul in the lake of fire.
    16. The following list is not exhaustive, and is not intended to be, and it does not need to be.

Just one of these sins is enough to send your soul to the lake of fire for all eternity.

  1. Adam, abortion, adultery (actual, mental, divorce), abusers of themselves with mankind, anger (without a holy cause), answering again (by employee, wife, child, etc.), arrogance, ashamed of Christ, astrology, attendance at services.
  2. Babblings (vain), backbiting, banqueting, bestiality, bitterness (including against wife), blasphemy, boasting, brawler, bribe, burying your investment pound from God, busybody.
  3. Chambering, child training (lack of), clamour, communion (unworthily), complain, conceit, concupiscence, contend against husband, contentment (lack of), contentious, conversation (corrupt), covetousness, corrupt communication, covenant-breaking, cursing (parents, etc.).
  4. Debate, deceit, defrauding, despiteful, despising dignities, despising little ones, destroyed (past cast down), discourage children, disobedient to husbands, disobedient to parents, drunkenness.
  5. Effeminate, emulation, entertain strangers (lack of), envy, evil eye, evil concupiscence, evil surmising, evil thoughts, extortion.
  6. Faithless (overwhelmed), false accusation, false witness, fantasies of sin, fear, fighting, filthy dreams, filthiness, flattery, foolish talking, foolishness, forgiving (lack of), fornication (thought or deed), forsake assemblies, fortune telling, froward.
  7. Gambling, gainsaying, giving (too little or grudging), giving for appearance, gluttony, God’s name in vain, gravity, greed, grudges.
  8. Hair length, haste, hatred, heady, heresy, highminded, hospitality (lack of), hypocrisy.
  9. Idle words, idolatry, immodest, implacable, incest, incontinent, inordinate affection, insubordination to husband, inventors of evil things, irreverence to husband.
  10. Jesting, job (less than your best), judgmental (harsh or hypocritical), judging by appearance, justice (lack of).
  11. Killing, kidnapping, kindness (lack of), knowing to do good but not doing it.
  12. Lascivious, lazy, liberty (abuse), look and lust for a woman, love (violate toward brethren or spouse), love of money, love of self, loving enemies (lack of), love of pleasure more than God, love of truth (lack of), lusts, lying.
  13. Malice, malignity, marital treachery, meekness (lack of), moderation, murder (thought, word, deed), murmur.
  14. Name-calling (without a holy cause), naughtiness, necromancy, neglect of spiritual duties (prayer, reading, charity, etc.).
  15. Odious, offending a little one.
  16. Parental honor (lack of), partiality, plans (without God’s will), pleasure in sinners by association or entertainment, perjury, praying for appearance, prating, pride, presumptuous, prognostication, provoke children to wrath, puffed up, purloining.
  17. Quiet (women maritally and men professionally),
  18. Rage, railing, rebellion, respect of persons, reveling, revile, revenge, riches (desire of), rioting, ruling spirit (lack of).
  19. Satisfied with wife (not), savings (not or not enough), scorn, sedition, self-love, self-will, self-righteous, slander, sobriety (lack of), sodomy, sow discord, sorcery, speak evil, spendthrift, stealing, strife, striker, stumblingblock to others, stubbornness, superfluity, surfeiting, swearing, swelling.
  20. Talebearing, tattling, taxes (not paying), television (sinful viewing), temperance (lack of), thought of sin, threatening, treasures on earth, trucebreaker, trusting in riches, tumult.
  21. Uncleanness, unforgiving, unholy, unmerciful, unrighteous, unthankful.
  22. Vainglory, variance, viewing evil things, violence, virginity (not).
  23. Wantonness, whispering, whoremonger, wickedness, witchcraft, without natural affection, without understanding, wrath.
  24. Anxiety.
  25. Yellow-belly fear.
  26. Abuse of booze.


  1. If you have one sin to your account before a holy God, you are doomed (Gal 3:10; Jas 2:10).
  2. All have sinned and come short of God’s glory and earned eternal death (Rom 3:23; 6:23).
  3. To remind you of hell, every funeral and your death warn of eternal damnation (Heb 9:27).
  4. But! Jesus died to pay for the sins of His people, and He comes again without sin (Heb 9:28).
  5. Jesus did not pay for all sins of all men; most pay for their own sins (Rev 21:8,27; 22:14-15).
  6. Your sins are overwhelmingly terrible on top of Adam’s, but grace is greater (Rom 5:20-21).
  7. The blood of Jesus Christ, thus communion remembrance, cleanses from all sin (I John 1:7).
  8. God’s will sent Jesus with a body for sin once for all … all time, all sins, all elect (He 10:10).
  9. God’s will and covenant of salvation includes not remembering sins and iniquity (He 10:17).
  10. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ as the Son of God and be baptized (John 8:24; Mark 16:16).
  11. Add to your faith the things listed to prove election and entrance into heaven (II Pet 1:5-11).
  12. Change your life and stay in Christ’s doctrine at any cost to be a true disciple (John 8:31-32).
