Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart.
Solomon used this part of Proverbs to teach his son about the danger of whorish women, and he did not want him to forget his words and rules (Pr 7:1-2). The looks and flattery of evil women are very powerful. Do not forget my warnings, son! The consequences of fornication are death and hell. You will ruin your life. Do not forget my lessons.
Good fathers warn their sons about the horrible danger of loose women, but sons must remember the warnings for them to do any good. Hearing a warning is one thing, but remembering it and avoiding the danger is another thing, especially when the danger is as appealing and enticing as a seducing woman. Remember what I have taught you, son!
To be told a certain road is washed out, but then to drive down that road at night is insane! It is just as foolish to read Solomon’s wise warnings about strange women, but then keep company with one, view pornography, or text a flirting woman. It is wisdom to take his kind warnings here and steer as far away from the identified danger as possible.
Here are two figures of speech teaching the practical importance of remembering wise warnings. You do not actually tie Bible verses around your fingers or write them on a table in your heart. The lesson is to keep the warnings with you and to have them firmly fixed in your internal thought processes. You cannot let these warnings slip away.
David said, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee” (Ps 119:11). You do this by memorizing the Word of God, so you can have it in your heart when you need it; or you can also meditate on God’s Word and lay hold of its strong emphasis against sexual sins. You must be committed at all times against strange women.
Israel’s fathers repeated God’s commandments often. He said, “And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates” (Deut 6:6-9).
Sexual temptations are everywhere today. Many women are whorish. If you forget God’s word you have heard, you lose its saving effect in your life (I Cor 15:2; I Tim 4:16). You cannot let teaching slip away (Heb 2:1-4). You must remember it and keep it, and you cannot resent or reject preachers who frequently repeat warnings (II Pet 1:12-15).
