“Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.”

Matthew 15:7-8

“Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men: Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.”

Preparatory Reading: Isaiah 58; II Peter 3

Introduction:

1. We have recently considered the manifestation of the sons of God to the universe (Romans 8:17-25).
2. Peter’s description of this event includes several warning appeals (II Peter 3:1,3,9,11,12,14,17-18).
3. We have studied our Lord’s exaltation, but minding earthly things makes us enemies (Phil 3:18-19).
4. God’s warning to Israel identified their hypocrisy and promised His great blessings (Isaiah 58:1-14).
5. We hate insincerity toward us; our Jealous God hates it even more (Ex 34:14; Deut 4:24; Josh 24:19).
6. We live in the perilous times of the last days, when hypocrisy is quite fashionable (II Tim 3:1 – 4:5).
7. We observe the Lord’s Supper today, and woe unto us, if we partake as hypocrites (I Cor 11:28-32).
8. Speaker and hearers shall all be held accountable for what we are about to read from God’s word.
